The SCF Leader of the Year award is presented in 2018 to Professor Hua Song of Renmin University of China, Beijing. Song is the leading adviser to the Chinese government on SCF matters and has also undertaken great efforts to educate companies and the academic world on the opportunities and advantages of supply chain finance.

“Professor Song has the leading research group in this space in China,” said Michiel Steeman, executive director of the Supply Chain Finance Community and chair of the judging panel. “He is widely regarded as the top expert in the country.”

Song has called for the sensible use of SCF, balancing the power between large buying organisations and their SME suppliers. “He used the term ‘SCF hooligans’ for large companies – especially governmental-linked companies – who abuse their power and SCF to extend payment terms to the extreme,” Steeman added.

Prof Song, who has published more than 60 papers in refereed journals, took the lead in drafting the supply chain finance section of the Guideline on promoting the innovation and application of the supply chain issued by The State Council of China in 2017.

This is the third year in which the SCF Awards judging panel has presented a ‘Leader of the Year’ award to an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to the development of supply chain finance. Last year’s winner was TradeIX and PrimeRevenue founder Robert Barnes. In 2016, the inaugural winner was Joost van den Hondel, who was influential in the establishment of Betaalme.nu.
